Internationally renowned for her style – visually very strong and vivid – as well as for her stance on political and social matters, the Dutch graphic artist Mieke Gerritzen trained at the Rietveld Academy. She is currently head of the design department at the Sandberg Institute, a postgrad branch of the famous college in Amsterdam. She has designed numerous logos, websites and catalogues with messages that are always very engaged.
For her first solo exhibition Mieke Gerritzen has decided to focus on the interplay between two- and three-dimensionality. The printed word thus becomes an object, picture or painted paper and the visitor is plunged into visual hyperactivity extending from floor to ceiling. Images are read, words are looked at; the boundary between visual and textual becomes tenuous. The exhibition seeks to demonstrate Gerritzen’s design philosophy: a participant in the initial concept for every project, style has assumed ever-increasing importance in contemporary design. Mieke Gerritzen takes us deep into a universe in which we again encounter her personal creations, the books Everyone is a Designer, Mobile Minded, Next Nature and Creativity for All, and includes a presentation of her film Beautiful World (2006). Conceived like a fashion magazine, the catalogue accompanying this `carte blanche’ exhibition pushes this omnipresence of style to its extremes.
